Willkommen auf dem Blog „museum beck.stage“. Diese Seite befasst sich mit der Frage, wie tiefgreifend der digitale Wandel Museen verändert und welche Schritte Museen unternehmen (können), um den digitalen Wandel zu steuern.
Zum Hintergrund: Digitale Medien spielen eine Rolle in vielen Bereichen der Museumarbeit – vom Sammlungsmanagement, über digitale Langzeitarchivierung, bis hin zur Vermittlung von Inhalten durch den Einsatz neuer digitaler Technologien in Ausstellungen. Digitales Storytelling, Gamification, der Einsatz von Virtual- Augmented- oder Mixed Reality-Anwendungen sind nur ein paar der Catch-Phrases, die verdeutlichen, wie digitale Innovationen Eingang in das museale Narrativ gefunden haben und finden.
Doch – und das ist die Annahme, die ich hier diskutiere – die Digitalisierung verändert Museen sehr viel tiefgreifender als es zunächst scheint. Sie verändert nicht nur die Arbeits- und Erzählweise der Museen (denn im digitalen Raum erzählen nicht mehr ausschließlich die Kuratoren), sondern sie verändert auch die Konzepte davon, was überhaupt erzählt werden soll. Letztlich transzendiert die Digitalisierung also das Selbstverständnis der Institution Museum…

Digital media have an impact on almost all areas of museum work – including collection management, digital long term archiving and the distribution of content through the application of innovative technologies in galleries and exhibitions. Digital storytelling, gamification, or virtual/augmented/mixed reality applications are only some catch phrases that give a notion of how deeply digital innovation is woven into the narrative of museums.
However – and that shall be the assumption here – in the digital age museums are transformed more profoundly than it may appear at first sight. It does not only change the way people work in museums and the museum narrative (since even the curatorial voice appears to be changing), but it does challenge traditional concepts of what stories should be told in museums. As a result the identity of many institutions seems to be changing…
